NIASPAN (niacin) and risk reduction

How you can help reduce your risk after a heart attack

Studies show that in patients with high cholesterol, the niacin in NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets)

  • Reduces the risk of a recurrent heart attack in patients with a history of heart attack
  • Slows or even reverses the progression of disease in patients with coronary artery disease, when used in combination with a type of drug called a bile acid binding resin

NIASPAN as part of your total risk management program

After you have had a cardiovascular event, your doctor may prescribe several different medications to quickly lower your risk factors.

The role of niacin, the active ingredient in NIASPAN, is to increase your HDL cholesterol levels.1 Studies show that increasing HDL cholesterol levels

  • Helps carry excess cholesterol out of your body
  • Lowers the risk of a second heart attack
  • Niacin also lowers your "bad" LDL-cholesterol and Triglycerides

NIASPAN may be prescribed along with other medications as part of a total program to reduce certain cardiovascular risk. The other medications have other uses, such as lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol or reducing high blood pressure. Each medication lowers your risk in a different way, so it's important to take all the medications your doctor prescribes.

Ask your doctor whether NIASPAN may be right for you.
