Increase in risk after heart attack

The active ingredient in NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets) can help reduce the risk of a second heart attack in patients with high cholesterol.1

NIASPAN can help raise HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol that carries excess cholesterol out of the body. It can also help slow the process of artery-clogging "atherosclerosis" when given in combination with another cholesterol medication, a bile acid binding resin.

Why you need to lower risk after a heart attack

Having one heart attack and high cholesterol puts you at much higher risk for having another. So quickly and effectively reducing all other risk factors is essential.

Good news: There are a lot of things you can do.

Your doctor has probably already talked to you about many of these ways to reduce your risk:

  • Control cholesterol levels
    • Lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides
    • Raise HDL cholesterol
  • Control blood pressure
  • Control blood sugar if you have diabetes
  • Lose weight
  • Quit smoking

Each of these things can help you lower your risk. Each is a new opportunity to become healthier and help avoid another heart problem.

Ask your doctor whether NIASPAN may be right for you, based on your cholesterol levels and personal risk factors.
