Treatment with NIASPAN
How you can help your doctor manage your treatment
Your doctor can do a lot to help improve your cholesterol numbers. But you can do even more.
1. Know your numbers
Learn your cholesterol numbers, and how they compare with the ideal targets. A useful tracker can help you follow your progress to your levels.
2. Accept the challenge
Your doctor wants you to reach target cholesterol levels because they represent a lower health risk to you. Every step you take closer to your goal is good. Start now!
3. Set yourself up for success
Succeeding makes you want to do more, so set yourself up to succeed often. Break your big goals into short-term goals you can achieve and celebrate. For instance, set a modest goal to add 20 minutes of exercise—perhaps simply walking—to each day. See how that helps normalize your cholesterol levels. Even a small success will give you a boost that can help motivate you to get to the next level.
4. Take steps
Do what you need to do. Eat more fresh, healthy foods and less fat. Get more exercise. Take your medications as prescribed. Talk with your doctor about what else you can do. Taking action puts you in control, and will give you important results.
5. Celebrate progress
When your HDL cholesterol level goes up, pat yourself on the back. When LDL cholesterol levels go down, take time to be proud of your achievement. Then, set new short-term goals and start anew.
Talk with your doctor about other steps you can take. Ask whether NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets) might be right for you.
