HDL and risk reduction

Higher HDL cholesterol for lower health risk

Many studies point to the important role of HDL cholesterol in lowering the risk of heart disease. Here are some facts from major studies:

  • For every additional mg/dL you increase HDL cholesterol, there is a 2-3 percent decrease in heart disease risk
  • For every 10 mg/dL increase in HDL cholesterol, there is about a 50% reduction in coronary heart disease risk

HDL cholesterol is protective

Having high HDL cholesterol (>60) is so good for you that it may reduce the risk associated with other risk factors (like high LDL cholesterol). That's why, if your HDL level is low, your doctor will try to raise it with NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets).

Niacin, the active ingredient of NIASPAN when given in combination with another cholesterol medication, colestipole, to patients with high cholesterol and history of coronary heart disease raises HDL, regresses plaques that block arteries, and reduces the risk of another heart attack.

There are several kinds of cholesterol in your bloodstream.

  • LDL cholesterol carries cholesterol into your arteries, where it can form along with other substances plaques that clog the flow of blood.
  • HDL takes the excess cholesterol back to the liver and passed out of your body.

By slowing the plaque build up HDL cholesterol helps keep your blood flowing and reduces the risk of major problems like heart attack. NIASPAN can help by raising your HDL cholesterol levels and niacin, the active ingredient of NIASPAN, can help regress the buildup of plaque in your arteries.*

Ask your doctor whether NIASPAN can help, based on your cholesterol levels and personal risk factors.
