Why Prescription Niacin?
NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets) is a prescription, extended-release form of niacin. NIASPAN gives you the long-established benefits of niacin, in a prescription form that is both effective and safe.
Why prescription niacin?
When treating a medical problem like cholesterol, getting the same amount (dose) of drug every time is important. Dietary supplement niacin—the kind you buy in the over-the-counter section of pharmacies—are intended to address nutritional deficiencies.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), dietary supplement niacin may "contain widely variable amounts of niacin-from none to much more than the label states." AHA states that "Dietary supplement niacin should not be used as a substitute for prescription niacin. It should not be used for lowering cholesterol."1
You want to do something good for your health.
If your doctor prescribed NIASPAN, it's important to take NIASPAN. NIASPAN currently is the only prescription extended-release form of niacin. Do not switch to another form of niacin, as liver damage has been reported when substituting NIASPAN for immediate release niacin. Always check with your doctor before changing your medication.
